"Heavy quarkonium as a probe of hot QCD"

The spectral function of heavy quarkonium is an observable possessing both a theoretically transparent connection to heavy ion phenomenology, and a non-trivial qualitative change as a function of the temperature, making it a conceptually clean probe of deconfined QCD matter. It has consequently been estimated with many tools, such as potential models, lattice QCD, and AdS/CFT techniques. I review some basic facts concerning this observable, and discuss then recent progress on its determination, by approaching the physically relevant range from the high temperature and heavy quark-mass side, where the spectral function can be computed systematically in the weak-coupling expansion.
