We prepare derivatives of fullerene, the molecule made of sixty carbons in the shape of a soccer ball. This molecule is the brick of a large family of compounds. Interesting electronic properties, including magnetism and superconductivity, are obtained by intercalation, but modification of the fullerene cage and introduction of atomic species inside it are also possible. Other materials with interesting properties are obtained by carbon coating molecular clusters and by exploiting the properties of carbon bonds intermediate between the sp2 and the sp3 hybridization.
