Forensic science

Our group collaborates with RIS (Raggruppamento Investigazioni Scientifiche dei Carabinieri) present in Parma, and different member of the staff are working as teachers in the Master in Forensic Sciences of the University of Parma.

We worked on the characterisation of the ball-pen inks, and in particular we studied the line-crossings to determine the chronological sequence of the lines, by means or micro-Raman spectroscopy.

We realized an extensive collection of Raman spectra of inks for ink-jet printers, also using the SERS (Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy) technique, in order to identify the possible sources of printed documents. The results of this study, combined with UV/visible micro-reflectometry measurements, were helpful in the solution of real investigative cases.

We performed also a combined Raman - Electron Microscopy study for the identification of gun powder residues
