The constraints on string and field theory orbifold models
arising from local anomaly cancellation are studied.
Although these anomalies naively cancel after integration over the
extra-dimensions, they break gauge invariance, spoiling the
consistency of the theory.
In some non-SUSY orientifold string models, where such anomalies appear,
they are found to cancel through an interesting generalization of
the Green-Schwarz mechanism. Its implications from a low-energy effective
field theory point of view are analyzed.
